Understanding CIDB classes of works
CIDB tender advertisements specify the class of work and grade required. Common classes include GB (General Building), CE (Civil Engineering), ME (Mechanical Engineering), EB (Electrical Building), EP (Electrical Power Generation) and SO (Specialist Operations).
CIDB grading threshold limits (Values)
Contractor grading designation determines the maximum tender value you can be awarded:
- Grade 1: Up to R500,000 (No financial track record required for entry level).
- Grade 2: Up to R1,000,000.
- Grade 3: Up to R3,000,000.
- Grade 4: Up to R6,000,000.
- Grade 5: Up to R10,000,000.
- Grade 6: Up to R20,000,000.
- Grade 7: Up to R60,000,000.
- Grade 8: Up to R200,000,000.
- Grade 9: Unlimited tender contract value.
How to upgrade your CIDB grading
To upgrade your grade, you must provide audited or independently reviewed financial statements proving your best annual turnover and available working capital over the past three years, together with completion certificates for relevant projects.
